How Do I Know if a Wheelchair or Transport Chair is Best?

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, we are often asked How do I know if I should use a wheelchair or a transport chair? This is a great question! Both a wheelchair and a transport chair are used when an individual requires extra help for mobility. Both pieces of equipment can be pushed by a caregiver allowing the user to be propelled without exerting any energy. Each type of chair has their own features and both types of medical equipment come in a variety of sizes and colors.

Wheelchair

Just as the name suggests, a wheelchair is a chair with wheels that is used when an individual needs assistance with walking, due to illness, injury or disability. Wheelchairs come in a wide variety of styles and uses, including for sports or motor operated. Wheelchairs can be self-propelled or attendant propelled (when a person is pushing the chair from behind). There are many items to consider and keep in mind when choosing a wheelchair, such as:

A Lift Chair Buyer’s Guide

The basic function of a lift chair is to assist a person to standing and sitting position with ease. When purchasing a power lift chair there are many things to consider. You may ask yourself “Why purchase a lift chair from Liberty Oxygen instead of a furniture store?” The answer is simple really. The lift chairs sold in furniture stores start out as a recliner and a motor is added to the chair after the fact. A lift chair sold in a medical supply company, such as Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, is focused on the motor. The motor comes first and the chair is built around it making it more durable. It’s also important for lift chairs to have a battery back-up capability so that if the electricity goes out the user will not be stuck in their chair. Two 9-volt batteries are easily accessible in the back of the chair. Overall, a medical lift chair will last longer than a furniture-brand lift chair.

At Liberty Oxygen, we take into consideration the user’s size as the chair needs to fit a person’s height, weight, and shape. Next, we ask how the chair will be used. Although lift chairs are not made to be used as beds, many people find it necessary to sleep in their chair for long periods of time. In this case, a dual motor chair is deal because it allows the person to recline in an infinite number of positions including zero gravity. We ask what physical conditions the user has, for example:

  • A person with some dementia issues will need a simple controller with fewer buttons.
  • A person with cardiac issues will benefit from a chair that will move into the Trendelenberg position, allowing the feet to rise above the heart.
  • A person prone to incontinence will need a chair made of a non-absorbent material.

A concern our customers often have is whether their insurance will pay for the entire lift chair. Sadly, insurance companies will not pay for the entire cost of a lift chair. If a customer qualifies for insurance coverage, the most that will be covered is the lift mechanism, which is around $360. Important Tips to Stay Safe in the Bathroom

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, we understand it is important to many aging individuals and their family caregivers to live independently in their own home, and reducing the risk of falls or accidents will keep your loved one safe – especially in the bathroom.

The bathroom is often thought of as the most dangerous room in the home for seniors. It’s easy to slip and fall leading to injuries or even hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that one in three adults over the age of 65 falls each year and less than half will alert a caregiver of the fall. That is concerning!

Many believe that falling is part of the aging process, but this is simply not true. The instance of falling may increase with age, but many falls can be prevented with simple adjustments or lifestyle modifications. Investing in basic home safety modifications for your aging loved one will bring a high return in peace of mind. Common recommendations for the bathroom and throughout the home include:

Why is a Good Night’s Sleep So Important?

Everyone needs their beauty rest – it is vital to our health regardless of age. While we sleep, our brain and body have the opportunity to recharge and restore energy levels, both physically and cognitively. But is a good night’s sleep even more important as we get older?

A common myth about sleep is that aging adults need less sleep than the average person. This is simply not true. According to Mayo Clinic, adults age 20 years and older require about the same amount of sleep, but as we age our natural sleeping patterns may change. Older adults tend to sleep more lightly and for shorter spans of time. Although the amount of sleep a person needs depends on various factors, especially age, the general recommendation for adults is 7 to 9 hours

Why is Sleep Important for Seniors?

It’s simple. As our body ages, the risk of injury increases and we become more susceptible to illness. Not only does the body need time to rest and repair to prevent physical issues including falls, but good sleep also allows the immune system the recovery necessary to fight disease and illness. Research also shows that individuals who consistently operate with just a few hours of sleep each night don’t perform as well mentally on complex tasks as those who achieve seven hours or more of sleep each night. Poor quality sleep can also lead to memory loss and forgetfulness, since the brain does not have the chance to fully recharge each night.

Common Sleep Issues and Treatment Tips

In addition to the many physical changes that occur as we age, changes to our sleeping patterns are also normal. Common sleep issues which may rob seniors of a good night’s sleep include:

  • Insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Frequent urination
  • Physical pain

Another common sleep issue that can be debilitating to some is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which an involuntary stoppage of breathing occurs while a person is sleeping. Individuals with untreated sleep apnea will stop breathing several times, sometimes hundreds of times, a night. This leads to the brain and body not getting enough oxygen. The most common treatment option is CPAP therapy, which can ease the symptoms and help prevent heart problems and other complications that can result from sleep apnea. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a treatment where the individual wears a mask over the nose and mouth while sleeping. The CPAP mask is connected to a small machine that delivers continuous air flow to the nose, which in turn encourages regular breathing.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is defined by the Mayo Clinic as a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons – SAD begins and ends around the same times each year. Seasonal affective disorder is much more than a case of the ‘winter blues’, it is a medical condition. This type of depression affects many people who live in northern states, such as Minnesota, in the late fall, winter, and early spring months due to a lack of sunlight during these seasons.

Seasonal affective disorder was made a clinical diagnosis in the early 1980’s. Only 2% of the population has SAD, on average, but this percentage rises the farther north you live. In Canada, it is estimated that approximately 20% of the population experiences some form of the symptoms. And, although more often diagnosed in women, men tend to have more severe symptoms. A main cause of SAD is a lack of sunlight. The use of a SAD lamp greatly helps our Minnesota customers and caregivers who are affected by this disorder. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment has a selection of lamps to consider at each of our eight metro area retail locations.

Also known as winter depression or winter blues, the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder include:

  • Lack of energy
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Sleeping longer
  • Irritability
  • Low sex drive
  • Lack of focus
  • Social withdrawal

Phototherapy, or light therapy, is just one method of treating seasonal affective disorder. This type of therapy is provided through the use of a light box (also called a SAD lamp), which is most effective when a person sits within two feet of it. Typically using the SAD lamp first thing in the morning and for at least thirty minutes per day is best. The SAD lamp emits a bright light, which simulates sun light and should be a minimum of 10,000 Lux. This metric measurement of light intensity (Lux) stimulates a receptor in the individual’s eye that in turn will cause a chemical reaction in the brain which is linked to mood and will in turn help to reset your circadian rhythms.

The “happy lights”, which they are often referred, will work for people with mild to very severe seasonal affective disorder. SAD light therapy is covered by most insurance companies with a medical diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder and a prescription for light therapy from a doctor. A doctor’s prescription is only necessary to purchase a SAD lamp if you want the insurance company to pay for it. Since coverage may vary, it’s best to contact your insurance company for specific criteria coverage. Dementia Friendly Communities

Knowing the importance of providing a safe and friendly space for the aging members of our community, Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment work to better support individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia and their family caregivers.

The Alzheimer’s Association defines dementia as a general term for the decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is a common symptom and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia.

Liberty Oxygen is a proud supporter of all businesses who pay special attention to the aging adults in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area and lend an extra hand. In fact, we are a designated member of the Home Instead Senior Care public education program, Alzheimer’s Friendly Business℠. Home Instead Senior Care Minneapolis offered free training to local businesses, including Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment and the Minnesota Orchestra Hall, to better understand this disease and manage behavioral-related situations that may arise. The program and training focus on the challenges that family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease face when going into the community with their loved one. This unique program provides local businesses the training necessary to become a safe environment for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Home Instead Senior Care Minneapolis understands the need for local businesses and their employees to be educated and informed on the disease as well as provide guidance to handle some common issues that may arise from customers with Alzheimer’s. ACT on Alzheimer’s is a Minnesota born collaboration that works with others to help prepare our state for the impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. A study shows 74% of caregivers surveyed report they or their loved one with dementia have become more isolated as a result of this disease. This is an alarming statistic that should not be ignored.
