Aging in Place Safely

Guest blog by Access Solutions and Augustana Care.

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment is committed to providing superior service and offering quality products for our Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area customers. We reached out to our friends at Access Solutions and Augustana Care for some tips to help you stay safe while aging in place.

Are you an older adult who would like to stay in your home? According to the United States of Aging survey conducted by AARP in 2012, approximately ninety percent of seniors surveyed intend to continue living in their current home for the next five to ten years. Of these individuals, eighty-five percent believe they are able to do so without having to make significant modifications to their home. Although major changes to the home may not be necessary, minor modifications can provide a more supportive environment that promotes independence.

Access Solutions, a division of Centrex Rehab, is co-owned by Augustana Care and other non-profit organizations. Access Solutions has partnered with community members to provide helpful information and resources to support older adults to continue living independently. Implementing simple, cost effective home modifications, which helps lower the risk of falls and promotes safe, active living, can help elders and those with disabilities live safely in their homes, when appropriate.

Access Solutions combines a knowledge of interior design with physical and occupational therapy and creates solutions which meet the unique needs of each client. Access Solutions uses a universal design approach to design all products and environments, to be usable by many people regardless of ability or situation, without the need for adaptation. This approach encourages the ability to age in place. Staff members’ goals are to create a safe environment so people of all ages living independently can complete daily tasks without risk of injury.

Services include those listed below and more:

  • Education/prevention
  • Home access assessments
  • Modification assessment report
  • Design and consultation
  • Alzheimer’s/dementia environment consulting

Access Solutions Director Alissa Boroff says, “People sometimes have to leave their homes because of environmental barriers. Yet often, all they really need are some simple adaptations or the right equipment.” As an occupational therapist and interior designer, Boroff typically follows residents from room to room to see how they navigate their surroundings. She will then suggest improvements, ranging from ideas such as removing slippery throw rugs to installing grab bars and railings. In many cases, the cost of installing railings in a few crucial places can run about $1,000 or less.

Following are simple, low-cost/no-cost updates that can be done to make your home more safe and livable as you get older:

Install grab bars in bathroom Generally used:

  • tub/shower
  • across from toilet
  • next to toilet
Install raised toilet seats Replace existing toilet with comfort height toilet, or add raised toilet seat to existing toilet.
Install lever handles Replace door knobs with lever handles
Install a railing at stairways Add railings at interior and exterior stairs
Install contrasting material or color on stairs Add permanent or semi-permanent contrast color at stair treads to easily see the steps
Neutralize thresholds at doorways Modify thresholds with transition strips or threshold ramps to be 1⁄2” or less
Update lighting Add additional task and general lighting
Create easy access to kitchen storage Add features for ease of use, such as:

  • pull out shelves
  • lazy Susan
  • drawers
Install adjustable hand-held shower head Replace existing shower head with one including controls that are easy to access and operate
Create easy access to closet storage Add varied height shelving and rods in closets for ease of use

This list was compiled by Access Solutions and Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging as a resource only.

Medical Equipment Options: Power Mobility Scooter and Lift Chair

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment in Minnesota, we understand there are many different types of medical equipment options available and want to make sure our customers know which type of equipment is best for their particular needs. In this article, we will focus on the power mobility scooter and the lift chair detailing when a person may need this type of equipment, benefits to using one, and provide video resources.

A person who suffers from muscular degeneration, COPD, shortness of breath, weakness, tremors, or has difficulty with balance, or dizziness may be an ideal candidate for the assistance of a power mobility scooter. This person typically cannot complete activities in their daily living, such as dressing, toileting, ambulating or eating without assistance, but must be capable of operating a power vehicle in their home. When assisting a customer with the selection of a power mobility scooter, we take into consideration factors such as:

  • Minnesota winter months
  • Portability
  • Indoor maneuverability
  • Versatility, indoors and outdoors
  • Outdoor capabilities, including performance and speed
  • Weight capacity

maxi comfort lift chairAnother commonly used type of medical equipment is a lift chair. The professionals at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment take pride in ensuring our customers purchase a lift chair that fits his or her needs. Some important considerations and questions help us determine the best chair possible, such as:

  • Customer’s size – the chair needs to properly fit a person’s height, weight, and shape.
  • How the chair will be used – although a lift chair is not intended to be used as a bed, many people find it necessary to sleep in the chair for long periods of time.
  • Physical conditions the person has – a customer with dementia will need a simple controller with few buttons.

Learn more about why you should purchase a lift chair from Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment instead of a furniture store by reading this article. It is also important to know what will be covered by insurance and what will not. At Liberty Oxygen, we are contracted to accept most insurances. Any of our Customer Care Specialists at all eight retail locations can help a customer determine if we take a particular insurance type and explain what it takes to get something covered. It can be a very confusing process, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Take a moment to read How to Buy a Lift Chair, which includes a video with Retail Sales Manager, Kristin Porrez demonstrating how to properly use and explaining why purchasing a power lift chair from a medical equipment store is the way to go:

Introducing the World’s Smallest CPAP: ResMed’s AirMini

By guest blogger Laura Jennings with ResMed

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment is committed to providing superior service and offering quality products for our Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area customers. We are excited to partner with ResMed and share their latest CPAP product, the AirMini. We believe using the AirMini while traveling will reduce the disruption in CPAP therapy and risk of sleep apnea for users. Recently, we asked ResMed to share more about the AirMini product and how it can help our customers.

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is crucial for patients with sleep apnea to feel rested and at their best each day. Unfortunately, bedside devices can be difficult for some people to travel with. In a recent survey, 65% of CPAP users said device size is the #1 reason they don’t take their CPAP mask and equipment every time they travel,1 which disrupts their therapy and exposes them to sleep apnea’s short- and long-term risks.

This is why we created AirMini, the world’s smallest CPAP. It weighs less than one pound and fits in the palm of your hand, and conveniently in your main carry-on bag or seatback pocket.

Waterless humidification

To shrink the CPAP size, we removed the water tub. With ResMed’s AirMini, humidification is built right in to the mask system: A HumidX™ humidifier captures your exhaled heat and moisture and redelivers it for maximum portable comfort, preventing dry mouth and eliminating the need to hunt down distilled water while traveling.

Smartphone-operated

The device works with an AirMini smartphone app, available on both iOS and Android, enabling users to:

  • Turn the machine on and off
  • Change set-up options and comfort settings
  • Track their own nightly usage data and view easy-to-read reports

The app provides up to a year of therapy history and a daily therapy score each morning. Once users download the app to their smartphones, they can connect to their AirMini via Bluetooth®. The app also offers guided equipment setup options, so patients can get a walkthrough of setting up their device preferences and fitting their mask.

CPAP and AutoSet

AirMini provides ResMed’s three main PAP therapy modes:

  • CPAP
  • AutoSet (automatically adjusting to your therapy pressure hourly, nightly and from season to season, this setting delivers the lowest pressure for effective treatment)
  • AutoSet for Her (the world’s only PAP therapy mode designed to treat female-specific symptoms of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea)

Works with ResMed’s latest masks

Designed as a second CPAP, AirMini works with:

  • AirTouch F20, our new memory foam full face cushion
  • AirFit N20 and F20, the latest silicone nasal and full face masks that fit 99 and 97 percent of patients, respectively
  • A special AirMini version of ResMed’s popular AirFit P10 nasal pillows mask

Accessories

Currently, the AirMini can be used with an AC power source. The device comes with a cloth carrying case and a power cable, and other accessories are available, including a DC-DC converter, AC adapter, mount system, a travel bag and travel case, and the HumidX/HumidX Plus waterless humidifiers and filters.

What do patients think of AirMini?

More than 80 percent of patients surveyed by ResMed preferred AirMini over two longer-selling travel PAP devices.2

Stacy and Arthur are two frequent flyers whose CPAP experience has changed for the better, thanks to AirMini. Hear their unique stories here.

We’re excited for you to experience AirMini for yourself through Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, and can’t wait to hear what you think.

Compression Therapy 101

Compression is a commonly used type of therapy which provides relief to those who suffer from various circulation issues, including chronic venous disorders, such as thrombosis and edema. Designed to apply gradient pressure, compression stockings are a specialized hosiery that will help increase circulation and prevent blood clots. Compression stockings fit tightest at the ankles and the compression gradually reduces towards the knees and thighs. This design forces better circulation in the narrow veins which results in less swelling, more blood returning to the heart and less blood pooling in the feet.

Benefits of wearing compression garments may include:

  • Improve venous blood circulation
  • Decrease the risk of blood clots
  • Decrease swelling
  • Prevent venous blood from pooling in the legs

Compression Stocking Size ChartProper fit is crucial to ensure successful compression therapy. There are several levels of compression available providing gradient levels of compression throughout the sock, so it is best to be measured by a professional or your doctor. The compression types are as follows:

8 – 15 mmHg:  very mild level of compression
15 – 20 mmHg:  moderate level
20 – 30 mmHg:  popular for those who travel or on their feet much of the day
30 – 40 mmHg:  offers high level of compression and is commonly used after surgery

In addition to compression stockings, TEDs (anti-embolism stockings) are an option. TEDs are typically used with bed bound (non-ambulatory) patients. Where compression hosiery offers a gradient compression throughout the leg, TEDs garments administer pressure on the lower legs and feet with most of the compression at the calf. TEDs garments are designed to prevent blood clots from developing in those who are not up moving around on their own. To help keep the two types straight, remember ‘TEDs are for bed’.

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment carries a variety of brands and styles to fit your needs and has certified fitters at all eight Twin Cities locations. Our fitters will assist you in selecting your stockings, donning, proper compression, style, fabric and color. Our certified fitters are knowledgeable in compression therapy, the equipment commonly used, and will provide tips and demonstration to help put the garments on.

Due to the actual compression and the thick material the stockings are made of, it can be difficult to put them on. This difficulty is one of the most common reasons for failed compression therapy. There are several ways to successfully put on compression stockings, including:

  • Turn the sock inside out and, starting at the toes, inch the sock up the leg
  • Use rubber gloves to obtain a better grip on the stocking and helps to avoid snags
  • Use a rigid sock aid
  • Use a stocking donner

It is helpful to put your stockings on first thing in the morning, before any leg swelling has occurred. It is important to ensure the stocking is pulled up evenly without bunching up which causes ineffective compression. The use of a stocking donner is also very helpful, especially if there is a loss of hand strength, an inability to bend over or other dexterity issues. Take a moment to watch this video showing step-by-step instructions on how to use a stocking donner.

The compression world has changed quite a bit over the years. Grandma’s rubber compression hosiery is actually fashionable now! Manufacturers have revolutionized the compression garments and offer a wide variety of stylish fabrics (including sheer), colors and styles.

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, our trained fitters can show you the wide variety of options, assist with correct size and type, donning, as well as proper care and use. All eight Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area have trained fitters ready to measure your legs and offer a personal fitting specific to your health needs. Stop in today and let our trained fitters bring your compression wear to the next level.

Tips for Using Your Walker

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment is the premier home medical equipment provider serving Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding Twin Cities suburbs with quality equipment and service. We enable you to stay safe and live independently in your home by offering a comprehensive array of home medical equipment and oxygen, including CPAP masks, machines and supplies.

Living independently is important to many Minnesota seniors and being able to make minor repairs to keep their medical equipment in tip top shape is crucial. We offer other resourceful videos, such as How to Buy a Lift Chair, and How to Clean Your CPAP Mask and Equipment for your reference and to help you to live more independently.

Watch this video and learn from our longtime employee, Dimitri, as he offers tips for proper and safe use of a walker (also referred to as a rollator), as well as how to make minor brake adjustments and tighten the brake cable when necessary.

3 Tips for Keeping Your Walker Safe and Working Properly:

How to Adjust the Handle Bars:  In this video, Dimitri tells us why it’s important to use a rollator properly. Avoid straining your shoulders and back by making sure the handle bars are at the correct height and learn how to make this minor adjustment at home.

How to Make Brake Adjustments:  When you apply the brakes on your rollator, the wheels should lock in place with no movement at all. If your walker continues to move even with the brakes on, learn step-by-step how to make minor brake adjustments to ensure safe use.

How to Tighten the Brake Cable:  With daily use of the rollator, the brake cables tend to strain and stretch out, which causes the cable to become loose and this affects the ability to adjust the brakes. Learn how to tighten up the slack on the brake line to ensure they are working properly.

To ensure your rollator is not the most boring one in the room, Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment offers some fun ways to jazz it up a bit. Find quick, easy ways to trick out your medical equipment and ensure your walker stands out from the rest! We also offer many accessory pieces to help you transport items safely while maintaining the functionality to continue managing daily chores or errands independently.

We hope you find this video and the step by step instructions from Dimitri helpful. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment serves the Twin Cities from eight convenient locations. Your health and well-being is too important to trust to just anyone. Let the caring professionals at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment assist you with the home medical equipment and other healthcare and oxygen supplies you need. Are You Trying to Finance Your Medical Equipment Needs?

By guest blogger Beth Paterson, Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional, NMLS #342859, Reverse Mortgages SIDAC, A Division of Greenleaf Financial, NMLS #173899

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment understands the financial needs of our customers can be challenging. We recently reconnected with Beth Paterson with Reverse Mortgages SIDAC to learn more about the options available to the seniors in our Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area communities.

Most Minnesota seniors want to stay in their homes and remain independent yet often believe they can’t for a number of reasons.  Having access to medical equipment or modifying a home could make your wish of remaining in your home a reality by providing a safer, more comfortable environment. Common oxygen and medical equipment needs, including daily living aids, will enable your senior loved one stay in their home longer. These equipment items may include:maxi comfort lift chair

  • Mobility equipment – a walker, wheelchair, rollator or power mobility scooter may be needed to help your senior loved one get around easier
  • Access ramp – this will allow easier access in and out of the home
  • Lift Chairs – move to several different standing and sitting positions, including the Trendelenburg postion
  • Hospital bed – to provide a more comfortable night’s sleep
  • Oxygen equipment – such as nebulizers, CPAP masks, machines and supplies
  • Aids for daily living – aids that make life that much easier, including compression stockings or braces/supports

Everyday activities such as bathing, toileting, cooking, and getting up and down the stairs can be made easier to perform by adapting the home or having well-fitting medical equipment.  Modifying the home can be as simple as installing grab bars in the bathrooms or touch buttons for turning lights on and off to installing lifts to access another level of the home.

By assessing medical equipment from Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment and modifying the home, one can live safely, comfortably and remain independent.  But how is this affordable?

Medicare is more complicated to receive and seniors are going without because the money needed to improve your life isn’t available. A line of credit or lump sum draw from a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) may be the solution beyond what Medicare will cover.  The HECM was first insured in 1989 by FHA for the purpose of providing a valuable financing alternative for senior homeowners to help them remain in their home and have access to funds by withdrawing a portion of their home equity.

A HECM, commonly known as a reverse mortgage, is a special loan allowing homeowners 62 years of age and older to remain in their home with security, independence, dignity, and control.  Similar to a conventional loan where a lien is placed on the home yet the borrower retains ownership.

Bob, a Minnesota senior, wanted to stay in his home.  He was approved for a reverse mortgage and with a portion of the proceeds he was able to modify his home by having the doorways widened to accommodate a wheelchair and had grab bars installed.  Bob is thrilled that he will be able to remain in his home for years to come and have the funds needed for future medical equipment needs also.

With the flexibility of making payments toward the loan balance, or NOT making a mortgage payment at all, the HECM reverse mortgage could provide the cash for immediate needs or future needs.  Note: borrowers are still responsible for paying property taxes, hazard insurance and maintenance of the home.

To qualify for a reverse mortgage, borrowers:

  • Are at least 62 years or older
  • Own their home with enough proceeds to pay off any current mortgages or liens
  • Meet financial assessment requirements demonstrating their ability and willingness to pay property taxes and insurance into the future.

In some circumstances a Life Expectancy Set Aside may be required to cover the property taxes and insurance. The reverse mortgage loan amount is based on the age of the borrower, their home value and an Expected Interest Rate.

Due and payable when the home is no longer the primary residence, usually when they move, die or sell, a reverse mortgage can allow one to remain in their home and use the equity for their needs or wants now.  As a non-recourse loan, there is no personal liability to the borrower or their estate.  If the home is sold for more than the loan balance then the borrower(s) or their heirs keep the difference.

The HECM Line of Credit funds, which have a growth rate on unused funds, can provide some safeguards for your future.  Additionally, you could change your payment plan option to receive tenure or term monthly payments; this can benefit you as your needs change.

One day, reverse mortgage borrower Anna and her daughter were sitting at the kitchen table and Anna shared that before their reverse mortgage she and her husband had struggled living just on their Social Security.  As they were sitting there looking at newspaper ads, Anna exclaimed, “Look, Depends are on sale, I can now stock up.”

Do you or a senior loved one need medical equipment or wish to modify your home to continue living there safe, comfortable and independent?  What about daily living aids that make life that much easier?  Consider a HECM to help you finance your medical equipment needs from Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment.

If you are in need of medical equipment, daily living aids or concerned about your CPAP equipment’s fit or function, call or stop by any of the eight-metro area Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations and one of the expert staff members can assist you with your needs.

All clinics are held from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm, unless otherwise noted and are on a walk-in basis. If you are unable to attend a clinic, please call your nearest Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment store to schedule a free check-up. While you’re there, be sure to take a look around the store, maybe you’ll find the perfect accessory for your medical equipment and improve your CPAP therapy!
