How to Buy a Lift Chair

I am Kristin Porrez and I am the Retail Sales Manager at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment.

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, we are contracted to accept most insurances. Any of our Customer Service Representatives at any of our eight locations can help the customers determine if we can take that insurance and what it takes to get something covered. For a lift chair though, the most that is ever going to be paid by any insurance company is going to be on the lift mechanism and that dollar amount will differ, but at this time that amount is in the $360 range. In order to get that part paid, and again it’s just the lift mechanism because the rest of the chair is considered a furniture item, the patient has to have a neuromuscular disease, such as Parkinson’s, or severe arthritis of the lower limbs, meaning knees, ankles, but not the back. A lot of people feel that a back injury or back surgery should be covered, but it is not. The patient also has to be unable to stand from a normal chair on their own, but able to walk once standing. That means even walking with a walker.

A lot of times people feel that they cannot stand from a normal chair on their own, but they are using a scooter or a wheelchair that has been purchased by their insurance company. If a wheelchair or scooter has been purchased by your insurance company, they are not going to buy a lift chair. The criteria contradict itself. A scooter or a wheelchair is paid by the insurance company because a person cannot walk, but the lift chair criteria as I mentioned is only paid if a person can walk once standing. Just if someone has a wheelchair or scooter, a lift chair will never be covered by insurance then.

Medical Equipment vs Furniture:

maxi comfort lift chairWe at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment recommend that a lift chair be purchased from a medical equipment store. A lot of furniture stores out there have lift chairs also, but there is a big difference between a lift chair you buy at a furniture store and a lift chair you buy at a medical equipment store. At a medical equipment store, the chair is built around the motor. At a furniture store, a regular recliner is taken and a motor is installed onto it, as an after-thought, so to speak.

When someone comes into one of our showrooms to look at lift chairs, we ask them a number of questions, starting with:

  • Who is the patient, who is going to use the lift chair?
  • What is the size of the person who is going to use it?
  • Is there dementia involved with the person using the chair? That will determine which type of chair they best qualify for.

Dementia:

There are a number of different chairs and models. The main difference between the styles is the motor. A two-button lift chair has two buttons on the remote and the chair goes up to stand the patient up and it reclines all the way. With only two buttons it makes it a lot easier to use for someone with dementia. As compared to a remote that has many buttons, there are more capabilities and more functions but is confusing if the patient has dementia of any kind. The type of chair with more functions will have a dual motor system which allows the user to control the back separate from the feet.

Using the Chair:

If someone has trouble sitting in a chair, it is good for the lift chair to be in the up position to begin with. Then the user can move the chair down to any position desired by using the buttons on the remote control, as well as back to a standing position when needed. The chair moves slow, so it is a safe way of getting up and down.

If the patient uses a walker, it is very important that the walker is kept next to the chair so when they sit down and stand back up the walker is nearby to help steady without having to take steps to get to the walker.

Dual Motor Programming:

On a lift chair with a dual motor, using the remote control the patient can program the buttons to their favorite position. The chair has a zero-gravity position option, an optimum TV viewing to be a bed, some patients need to use it for sleeping at times.

lift chairColors and Fabrics:

We inquire where the chair will be located in the home, so we can help them pick out a chair with the color and fabric that will work best in their home. There is a wide variety of colors and fabrics available for the chairs. Each chair model will have a number of fabrics that are standard, which means there will be no additional charges for the standard fabric. There are also vinyl options, which is good for a patient with incontinence, and also a faux leather option. This is a great option – it looks and feels like leather, it will not show scratches and it’s easy to clean. This is a popular choice – the fabric holds up to heat and sun without feeling hot or fading.

Delivery and Installation:

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, we offer free Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area delivery. All of our eight locations have a great selection of chairs and fabrics to choose from. When the chair is delivered by Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, the chair will be placed in the home where the patient wants it, the chair will be plugged in with back-up batteries installed and tested to ensure the chair is ready to go.

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment in Minnesota, we take pride in ensuring that our customers purchase a lift chair that fits his or her needs. As you can see, there are many options to choose from and things to consider when purchasing a power lift chair. It can become overwhelming when researching your options, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. Any of the Customer Care Specialists at any of the eight Liberty Oxygen store locations will be able to assist you, including helping you with questions on insurance coverage. Medical equipment is not typically very exciting, but at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment we try to have a little fun when it comes to accessorizing your medical equipment needs. We have accessories to trick out your mobility equipment as well as a variety of CPAP mask clips to make the mask a little more personalized. Take a look around the store, maybe you’ll find the perfect accessory for your medical equipment and improve your CPAP therapy!

CPAP technology is constantly changing and evolving. Eleven years ago, the CPAP machines were not computerized. Approximately 10 years ago, the manufacturers included an SD card and a hard drive in the machines to record the data. The way the data transmits has evolved over the years too, and current machines have a wireless Bluetooth connection as well as a built-in humidifier that auto-adjusts based on the humidity levels in the room. There are applications available to download to your cell phone that enable the patient to see their data throughout the day, such as:

•  How long the patient slept

•  Mask leakage

•  Snoring

•  Hypopnea and apnea readings

Whether you are buying your first CPAP mask or replacing a current one, when you think about your next mask purchase, be sure to consider and try on the latest styles before deciding on the one for you. Let the experts at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment assist you with comfort and fit as well as teaching you how to care for and properly use your CPAP mask. The friendly staff at our eight Minneapolis/St. Paul metro medical equipment store locations are also educated and experienced with insurance procedures and can work with your insurance company to ensure your CPAP mask and supplies are covered. Contact us today with any questions by calling or stopping by any of our retail stores.

3 Things You Need to Know About Your Vein Health

medi-logo-loresBy guest blogger Samantha Fiero, Territory Business Manager MN/ND, mediUSA.

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment
is proud to sell medi compression products in all eight of its Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota metro locations. Medi’s premium mediven brand compression stockings (also called compression hose) provide
medically accurate, comfortable, and fashionable compression for all sizes and styles to support healthy veins and legs.

It’s easy to know when your skin, teeth, or overall diet is in good or bad health – these are important parts of your body that you see every day! But what about the less visible parts of your health? Though you may not see it in action, your venous system covers every part of your body and is essential for helping keep your blood flowing. When it comes to understanding your venous health and stopping the development of vein disease, there are three important things you need to know.

  1. Knowledge matters. Understanding your veins and what causes vein disease is the first step to preventing it.
  2. Compression matters. Compression therapy is the gold standard for healthy legs and for treating vein disease – but it’s important to make sure that you are using graduated, medical compression garments to provide safe and effective therapy.
  3. Fit matters. Compression garments are medical devices and need to be fitted just for you by a trained professional in order to provide effective therapy. Luckily, wearing comfortable, stylish compression garments has never been easier!

mediven_comfort_calf_ebony_closedtoeKnowledge matters. With every step you take gravity is pulling you towards the ground. This force from gravity makes it more challenging for the veins in your legs to push blood back up your legs towards your heart, as they are forced to push against gravity. This is why standing for long periods of time can cause swelling of the feet and ankles – the tissues fill up with fluids while you are standing and struggle to empty that fluid into the veins until you are lying down and the force of gravity is lessened. Extended pressure on the veins in your legs can weaken the vein walls and valves, leading to the development of vein disease. Vein disease can be caused by environmental factors such as sitting or standing for long periods of time, but can also be hereditary, and many women experience the beginnings of vein disease while pregnant. While vein disease may begin as seemingly harmless swollen ankles or sore legs, if left untreated the complications of vein disease can be far worse. It can progress to varicose veins, chronic venous insufficiency, venous ulcers, or blood clots.

mediven_sheer_soft_panty_naturalCompression matters. To keep your veins healthy, they need a little support. Literally – they need support! And that’s where quality medical compression garments like medi’s come in. Graduated medical compression garments are the gold standard for maintaining healthy veins and for the treatment of vein disease. A “graduated compression garment” exerts graduated pressure on the legs, with the greatest pressure at the ankle and decreasing pressure up the calf and thigh. Graduated compression mimics the natural pumping action of your veins and supports weakened veins walls by pushing the blood from the ankles up the calf and thigh. If the level of compression exerted was the same throughout the whole garment, then it would not successfully push the blood from the ankle up the leg back to the heart; the blood could remain trapped in one area, and the garment could cause a tourniquet effect, pushing blood back down the leg to the ankle. This would expedite and worsen the development of vein disease instantly.

Fit matters. Would you ever take a medication without knowing what it was or what dose you were taking? Of course not! Similar to medications, medical compression garments are medical devices, and it is important that you are fitted with the correct size and type of garment by a trained professional. High quality stockings come in many sizes and are designed for specific ankle, calf, and thigh sizes to provide medically accurate compression. If you’re wearing a compression garment that is too big, it will not provide the compression necessary to support your veins and provide effective treatment; if you’re wearing a garment that is too small, it will constrict your legs and could cause pain. Based on your exact leg measurements, a trained fitter will select the correct size for you. All eight Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations are conveniently located throughout the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area and have trained fitters who can help you find the correct size and style of premium mediven compression garments for your specific vein health needs.

mediven_vitality_tan_medigrip_topbandThere are many types of compression garments available – but how do you choose the best one, that will provide high quality, accurate medical compression and fit seamlessly into your Minnesota lifestyle and wardrobe? At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, trained fitters can show you different types of compression garments, from stylish mediven sheer & soft stockings, to trendy mediven for men socks in classic and modern patterns, to the new mediven for women vitality socks, perfect for work or casual outfits. Long gone are the days of grandma’s uncomfortable, sagging compression stockings!

Vein health matters. Compression quality matters. Product selection matters. Fitter services matter. That’s why medi partners with businesses like Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, who care about creating the best compression therapy plan for their customers to support healthy legs, healthy veins, and healthy living!

How To Clean Your CPAP Mask and Equipment

Hi, I’m Francis Sheehy with Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment. Today I’m going to show you how to clean your CPAP machine with daily, weekly and monthly instructions.

We’re going to start out by disconnecting the mask from the tubing and disconnect the tubing from the machine. Today I’m demonstrating with a Respironics 560. Once you disconnect the mask, you can take the water chamber out and if there is any excess water in it you are going to pour it out and let it air dry until the next use. For use with your CPAP mask, there are wipes that are non-alcoholic and designed specifically for the CPAP mask. Do not use any bleach or Clorox wipes on your mask, it will ruin the seal. So if you have these CPAP Mask Wipes, take one out and wipe around the edges of your mask, inside, and underneath the seal. I am demonstrating on an Amara View Respironics CPAP mask.

Daily:  Wipe mask with a warm damp cloth (or use a CPAP mask wipe); empty and set out water chamber to dry; drain excess water from tubing and hang to dry until next use.

Weekly:  Soak mask, headgear, tubing and water chamber in warm soapy water then allow to air dry until next use.

Monthly:  Rinse out the reusable black filter in a Respironics CPAP machine with warm soapy water and allow it to air dry before replacing back in the machine; replace disposable white filter (more frequently if discolored); wipe down CPAP machine with a damp cloth.

If you have any questions on your CPAP equipment or the steps demonstrated in this video to clean your CPAP equipment on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, our knowledgeable staff can assist you. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment has friendly, experienced staff available to help at each of our eight Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota metro area locations, including questions on insurance coverage of these supplies or finding the perfect accessory for your CPAP mask. Why Should You Replace CPAP Supplies?

Care and Cleaning of CPAP Supplies - Cheat SheetWhen using CPAP therapy to treat your sleep apnea, it is important to replace your supplies on a regular basis. We at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment work closely with our Minnesota CPAP and BiPAP customers and suggest routine replacement of your CPAP supplies for these 3 reasons:

Wear and Tear:

  • CPAP masks are made of medical grade silicon. This material will degrade over time, becoming stiff and/or cracking.
  • The mask seal will become loose and not inflate as well.
  • The headgear straps become loose due to scalp oils and the daily tension on the elastic, resulting in air leaks which then requires increased tightening to adjust the fit and further stretching.

All the above leads to less than optimal sleep therapy as well as potential skin irritation.

Microbial Contamination:

  • Replacing and cleaning the filters prolongs the life of the machine by keeping dust and allergens out and enhancing the purity of the air you breathe. Inhalation of bacteria leads to other health issues.
  • More attention needs to be paid to the daily cleaning and 6-month replacement of the CPAP mask and headgear as they come in contact with the skin, mouth and nasal airway.

A 2009 Harvard study showed that the older a mask is, the less effective regular cleaning becomes.  The study surmised that a “biofilm” of microscopic debris adheres to the mask and headgear breeding bacteria, fungi and potentially yeast.  The silicone surface becomes pitted and resistant to disinfection over time.

The study concluded that after 6-months of CPAP use, masks that were swabbed and cultured before washing showing a growth of >2000 colonies (bacteria) per dish at 48-hours.  Following washing, the masks were again swabbed and cultured and there was no significant reduction in colonies.  The study found masks, tubing and water chambers, regardless of disinfection method or frequency following 6-months of use, cannot be properly cleaned and need to be replaced.

Insurance Coverage:

Many people replace their CPAP supplies as often as their insurance company will pay for them.  The insurance industry is on board supporting the 6-month replacement of CPAP supplies as they believe it enhances optimal sleep therapy – better sleep contributes to the improvement of their insureds overall health.

To receive proper CPAP therapy, achieve the maximum lifespan of your supplies and reduce contamination, the CPAP mask and accessories need to be cleaned on a regular basis:

Daily:  Wipe mask with a warm damp cloth (or use a CPAP mask wipe); empty and set out water chamber to dry; drain excess water from tubing and hang to dry

Weekly:  Soak mask, headgear, tubing and water chamber in warm soapy water for 15 minutes then let air dry

Monthly:  Rinse out reusable filter with warm water; replace disposable filter (more frequently if discolored); wipe down CPAP machine with damp cloth

Here is a video that helps explain how to properly clean your CPAP Machine:

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment recommends at a minimum of every 6 months all CPAP and BiPAP supplies be replaced with the exception of disposable filters (as listed below). Most insurance companies follow Medicare guidelines and will pay to replace various supplies more frequently. The following is the most common schedule to replace CPAP supplies (this can vary by insurance company):

CPAP Accessory                                     Replacement Frequency

Tubing                                                      Every 3 months
Mask (not headgear)                                Every 3 months
Headgear                                                 Every 6 months
Chinstrap                                                  Every 6 months
Disposable Filter                                       2 per month
Non-Disposable Filter                              Every 6 months
Humidifier Water Chamber                      Every 6 months

Summer Fun at Liberty Oxygen

At Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, we like to keep the good times rolling by hosting contests and fun employee outings. Medical supplies and oxygen equipment normally isn’t very exciting, but we make the most of our short Minnesota summers and enjoy spending time with our employees and clients with a variety of company events. One example is our annual Show Us Your Crown photo contest. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment donates to the American Lung Association Minnesota based on the entries we receive. With each entrant that submits a photo (or multiple photos) to the contest while wearing one of our Lady Liberty crowns, Liberty Oxygen donates $10 to the Minnesota chapter of the American Lung Association.

2016 marked our 9th Annual Show Us Your Crown contest and once again, we received many great photo entries! Each year, our friend Cheryl Sasse, RRT, Director, Lung Health, from the American Lung Association Minnesota is the official judge and chooses the winners of the contest. Thank you Cheryl for your partnership with Liberty Oxygen over the years – it is invaluable to our customers and us. The fundraising component of this fun contest mean even more to our clients and employees! Click here to check out more of the 2016 photo entries.

We love hosting this contest each year, seeing the creative photos our clients and employees submit, and most of all knowing that together we are helping people with chronic respiratory disease get the CPAP equipment and oxygen supplies they need to maintain their maximum health.

It’s not all fun and games, we do have serious business to conduct with our clients, but our knowledgeable, experienced employees add a touch of humor to their day when helping customers understand what type of mobility equipment will be best for their situation, find the perfect fitting CPAP mask, or test out power lift chairs. We actually make shopping for raised toilet seats and compression stockings an enjoyable experience!

Recently, we invited a representative from Golden Technologies to our stores to provide training to our employees on power scooters. As I’m sure you can imagine, this training could get dry in a hurry, but we were able to add a little fun while still keeping with the important topic at hand.

Fun with scooter training!

Fun with scooter training!

We also took our show on the road… literally! We had the opportunity to visit the delightful residents of Brookdale Minnetonka Carlson Parkway Senior Living and brought our showroom to them. We performed minor equipment repairs and set up all of our lift chairs and mobile equipment options in the ice cream parlor of their senior living community. Our trained staff offered a walker check-up clinic where we tightened the brakes and performed minor repairs at no cost. It was a fun way to reach out and connect with the seniors in our Minneapolis/St. Paul area community! Find some photos from the roadshow here!

To wind up the summer, Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment treated our fabulous employees to a Saints game at CHS Field with tailgating activities before the game. The weather was perfect and the Saints organization always provide some crazy entertainment throughout the baseball game, plus we added some of our own activities before the game too! Visit our Facebook page to see more photos from the employee event!

If you are looking for a career doing something you know each day will make a difference in the lives of our local seniors and their families and want to work with a fun group of people, look no further than Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment. We are currently looking to hire enthusiastic and dependable individuals for the position of Customer Service Representative in a couple of our stores. If you would like more information on the open positions and to send your application information, please contact our St. Louis Park store at 952-920-0460.

Interview with Denise Abbott and Complete Care Group

Complete Care Group LogoLiberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment is proud to partner with Complete Care Group as a preferred provider. Recently we caught up with Denise Abbott, LSW and Clinical Liaison, and spoke to her about the services Complete Care Group offers to Minnesota seniors and their families.

Complete Care Group offers high quality medical care directly to residents of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota metro area independent living, assisted living and memory care communities through their clinical liaisons and the many preferred providers they partner with. Complete Care Group takes a coordinated and collaborative care approach, which keeps seniors safe and healthy longer and also helps to avoid unnecessary hospital stays. By doing so, this alleviates some of the burden and stress the families and seniors experience when trying to coordinate the various insurance, medical and home care needs, including durable medical equipment.

When talking with Denise Abbott, LSW and Clinical Liaison with Complete Care Group, she said “with the growing population of older adults, senior housing has had to respond by offering a wide variety of options.” The level of care the senior requires will dictate what type of senior housing community they may live in, such as:

  • Aging in Place – Older adults continue to live in their own home. There is a history and familiarity by staying in their own home, but taking care of a home is tedious and a lot of work. The home may need some modifications. A one-level home would be ideal, but home modifications can get expensive.
  • Live with Family – This is a much less expensive option, but adds stress to the family relationship over time.
  • Independent Senior Living – Typical age is 55+, many are still working and are very active. Things such as wider door frames, elevators, and common spaces make this type of housing feel like an apartment building. There are also extra amenities and activities geared towards the seniors to encourage socialization.
  • Assisted Living – There is staff on duty 24-hours a day 7 days a week offering many levels of care. Some may receive a couple meals each day or medication assistance, others may require bathing assistance. Within this type of housing, you will find some units or entire floors are dedicated to the different types of care requirements. Many have different levels of care on their campus and the senior can move to different units or floors depending on the care they need, but still stay at the same residential community.
  • Skilled Nursing Facility – 24-hour nursing care, including medication assistance and complex medical conditions. Typically, there are limitations on visiting hours, smaller rooms, and it can get expensive.

Read this blog post for more information. Assisted living communities are very supportive for those who need some assistance but still have independence, but a common misconception is that this type of residential community offers anything the senior may need, whenever the need arises. One-on-one care is not available at assisted living communities and Denise stated they often receive questions asked by family members, such as these:

  • My senior loved one needs therapy, who should we go with?
  • Dad needs to use a scooter now, but how do I get it covered by insurance?
  • Mom needs a ride to the grocery store, how does that get arranged?

Services like transportation may be available at the senior housing community for group outings, but not usually for individual errands or appointments. This is an example of when Complete Care Group steps in. Complete Care Group is not a home care agency, but they bring many of these supplemental services via their preferred providers who are home care agencies, to seniors at the assisted living center to choose from. To become a preferred provider, there has been extensive background research, meetings, and communication on the expectations of customer service, services provided and turn-around time. Quality care and services including but not limited to home care, primary care, hospice, home health aides, and durable medical equipment are available. Complete Care Group works closely with the home care agencies and coordinates the services needed directly with the provider and the family. Complete Care Group will always honor patient choice in providers.

When speaking with Denise, she explains that their customer is the senior housing community and they mainly focus on assisted living, independent living, and memory care type centers. They meet with staff at the housing community and recently our own Mary Rempfer presented an educational session for the residents at a local Minnesota senior housing community on different types of medical equipment & aids for daily living. The Complete Care Group staff also works individually with the residents to determine their supplemental needs. A clinical liaison will perform a head to toe assessment to know exactly what is needed and how to help. The liaisons have some medical training or nursing background as well as triage background.

Once an assessment is complete and the resident knows what additional services may be needed, the clinical liaisons work with the senior, their family, and the preferred providers of their choice to fulfill these needs. For example, if it is discovered that a resident needs the use of a walker or other type of medical equipment, they will offer to help arrange this with a preferred provider for durable medical equipment, such as Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment, and get the equipment delivered to the resident along with instructions for proper use. Complete Care Group works with many quality health care companies that offer services in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area including physician groups, home care, primary or specialty care physicians, hospice care, podiatry, workout facilities, companion care, skilled nursing, as well as hair salons, prosthetics, and massage therapy.

There is no fee for Complete Care Group’s services and the insurance is billed directly to the senior. There are no changes to the individual health insurance providers and if a visit to the primary care physician is needed, the senior will still be responsible for co-pays, and billing as normal. If there are any services or equipment needed, the billing will come from the service provider – you will never receive a bill from Complete Care Group. The liaisons will also assist with any insurance paperwork, questions and to make it easier on the resident the liaison will share the insurance information, with your permission, with each of the preferred providers connected with your senior. One less hassle to worry about!

Navigating the health care system as your senior loved one ages and has more health care needs is a daunting task. The professionals at Complete Care Group can help determine what is the best fit for your senior loved one and coordinate the services with quality, trusted care providers like Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment. They also ease the burden of having to contact several different agencies for different services, so that senior residents and their family can have just one contact person to follow-up with.
