Flu Season

by Guest Blogger – John Stuck, Home Instead Senior Care Minneapolis

We all know the tell-tale signs: fever, cough, body aches, runny nose, and chills. During this time of year in, these symptoms typically mean the flu. flu-season

If you’re over the age of 65, protecting yourself from the flu is serious business. As we age, our immune systems weaken making to fight illnesses like the flu. In fact, those over the age of 65 are more likely to be hospitalized or die from the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older get a seasonal flu vaccine each year. For people 65 years and older, there are two flu shots available. The regular vaccine is still available, but you may want to ask your doctor about the high dose vaccine.

Caregivers are also at high risk for getting the flu, and if not vaccinated can easily spread it. According to the CDC, the flu virus can be spread starting one day before symptoms are even present. Vaccination for caregivers is critical in the effort to keep themselves healthy, but also to keep those they care for healthy.

Regardless of your age, it’s also a good idea to remember cover your coughs, wash your hands often and avoid those who are ill. These are regular precautions that our CAREGivers take. If you start to notice those tell-tale symptoms, call your doctor immediately – there may be medications to help.

You can learn more about the flu by vising the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

For people who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coming down with the flu can be much worse. People who have COPD have compromised lung function and this puts them at a much higher risk for getting influenza. Once the flu strikes a COPD patient, it can be more severe also. Even the medications and inhalers they use puts them at an increased risk for pneumonia and other respiratory infections. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment recognizes these risks and works to ensure that their CPAP and BiPAP customers are using equipment that is functioning properly and fits correctly. This, along with making sure they are vaccinated will help prevent the flu this season.

If you are concerned about your CPAP equipment’s fit or function, call or stop by any of their eight metro locations and one of their expert staff members can examine your mask supplies, check your pressure settings, fit you with a new mask if necessary and walk you through cleaning procedures.

Interview With Colleen Bazzani from the American Sleep Apnea Association

According to the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA), the word “apnea” is Greek for “without breath.” Sleep apnea is an involuntary interruption in breathing that happens while the patient is sleeping. The three different types of sleep apnea are:

  • Obstructive
  • Central
  • Mixed

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common of the three. Although there is a difference in the cause of each type of sleep apnea, the common thread in all types is the patient stops breathing during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times, and often for one minute or longer. A CPAP mask aids in providing oxygen to the patient during these times. Wisp

Colleen Bazzani is a registered Sleep Technologist and the Clinical Sleep Health Educator at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. She is one of just four people in the state of Minnesota with a certification in Clinical Sleep Health. I spoke with Colleen about sleep apnea and how the ASAA and the West Metro A.W.A.K.E meetings in Minneapolis can help those with sleep disorders.

Tell us about the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) and how you serve individuals living with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders in Minneapolis.

The ASAA is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness of sleep apnea, continually works to find improvements in treatments for sleep disorders and advocates for the interests of patients. Through education and research, their goal is to increase sleep apnea awareness with the hope of reducing unnecessary injuries, disabilities and premature deaths associated with this disorder.

Colleen hosts the West Metro A.W.A.K.E meetings through the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA). A.W.A.K.E meetings have been held in this area since the late 1980’s with an ongoing mission to help individuals with sleep disorders. Their goal is to educate, provide resources and treat the patients with disorders. There is no cure for apnea, except maybe weight loss or surgery, and as people get older their bodies change, including the throat area. These body changes affect breathing and is the main cause for apnea. Sleep apnea tends to be worse as people age. It is a chronic disease, with lifelong effects, can be hereditary, and also very serious if left untreated.

What does A.W.A.K.E stand for and what does this support group offer?

A.W.A.K.E stands for Alert, Well and Keeping Energetic. The A.W.A.K.E group offers education and health information, along with the tools needed, to people with sleep apnea enabling them to manage their own health care successfully. At the quarterly West Metro area A.W.A.K.E support group meetings in Minneapolis, there will typically be a guest speaker or specific health related topics of discussion, such as weight loss, diabetes, CPAP, or high blood pressure. Participants are welcome to attend other group meetings in the area. It is a non-profit group, and there is no buying or selling of products and services at the meetings, just information for the attendees. Each group runs their meetings differently, but the West Metro meetings will usually have ‘what’s new in CPAP’ information, a demonstration of new masks and other educational materials. The meetings are held in March, August and December in the afternoon and evening. Typically 100 – 300 people attend each meeting. For more information on an A.W.A.K.E meeting in your area, visit:

http://www.sleepapnea.org/support/a.w.a.k.e.-network-map.html

What role do CPAP masks play in helping people sleep better?

CPAP masks play the comfort role. There are various styles on the market, such as in the nose, over the nose, and a total face mask being just a few options. When looking for a well-fitting mask, comfort is key. The patient doesn’t want to experience any redness or breakdown of the skin, and the mask must fit properly and comfortably in different sleep positions and without a feeling of claustrophobia. A proper fitting mask will ensure better compliance with their therapy.

Can you share some information about local events taking place?

In the fall, there is a sleep awareness campaign with a focus on technical skills within the organization. We also go into local schools and talk to the students in health class and discuss the importance of sleep health, sleep deprivation and the effects, both mentally and physically, poor sleep health will have on the teenage body. This includes our quarterly A.W.A.K.E meetings and ongoing CPAP education classes offered at the Methodist Sleep Disorder Center.

What is the typical patient looking for and how does Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment fit their needs?

Many times, a patient needs educational help, new equipment ideas or assistance with technology. Sometimes the patient is just looking to update their CPAP mask and equipment. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment has an experienced staff at each of their eight locations that is courteous and willing to assist the customer with their questions or with CPAP equipment. Liberty Oxygen has a large selection of different styles, manufacturers, and equipment so the patient can be more in control of their own health with all the selections and options available. The knowledgeable staff also helps their customers each day with insurance questions and have become ‘experts’ in the insurance system.

Is there any upcoming event information or resources you can share with the Liberty Oxygen customers?

The next A.W.A.K.E meeting will be held December 2, 2015, at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center. There will be two meeting times at 4:00 and 7:00. Both meetings will have a guest speaker and will last approximately one hour. The December guest speaker will be ResMed, a CPAP manufacturer. The meetings are free of charge, no RSVP needed and snacks and beverages are offered. Both sessions are the same, so those interested will only need to attend one. There is also a Sleep Fair in March that we will be involved in. There are no dates established for this event yet. Also, the Methodist Sleep Disorder Center hosts CPAP education classes on an ongoing basis with afternoon and evening sessions available. These education classes are great for new CPAP users.

Walker or Rollator? How to Know Which Type of Mobility Equipment is Needed

There are so many options to choose from, but how do you know which type of mobility equipment is best for your situation or needs? In this series of articles on mobility equipment we take a look at the various options available and give you some information on each type to help you know which piece of equipment may be best for you or your senior loved one. This is the second article in the series and we’ll focus on walkers and rollators to help you understand the differences. If you missed our first article in the series, click here for more information on crutches and knee walkers.

Is your senior loved one living an independent lifestyle but may need a little extra help getting around? Do you have a condition such as arthritis, chronic back problems, had your hip replaced recently or experience breathing complications and notice how this has taken a toll on your endurance and ability to move around? Many seniors want to continue living independently on their own but have conditions that inhibit their ability to walk or move around their own home safely, but the use of a walker or rollator can prolong this independence and both are quite simple to use. Walker.jpg

In addition to experiencing a fall or having surgery, general aging will also affect a senior’s ability to safely move around their home and Minnesota community. Typically, there is a decrease in strength, balance and vision, as well as other issues that all affect the elder’s mobility both inside and outside the home. Generally, a standard or a Hemi-walker will suffice. A walker is a common type of mobility aid used to give the person who is still able to walk some added support.

A walker is a four-legged aluminum, lightweight frame which allows the user to lean on it for balance, support, or rest when needed.  A standard walker offers the elder the extra support they need for daily mobility along with features such as the capability to easily fold flat so it can fit in a car, bus or plane for transport. Other options include height adjustability and front wheels to help the user maneuver outdoor terrain.

A Hemi-walker is designed for individuals who have little or no dexterity in one hand or arm and for those who may not need a full walker but could use a wider base for support. Both types of walkers are lightweight, adjust to proper height, fold or collapse for easy storage and offer good stability to ensure safe mobility. Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment also carries several different accessories for each type of walker to make it a perfect fit. HemiWalker

A rollator is basically a walker with 4 wheels. This type of walker also has brakes, a seat and includes a basket or bag. A rollator is beneficial for seniors who need a walker for balance but don’t need to put much weight on it. They should have the hand strength and mental capacity to use the brakes. This type of mobility aid also offers a seat to rest and the ability to carry items while providing the security of having something to hold on to when walking.

With any of the above mentioned walking aids, you can customize or personalize the equipment in a variety of ways. Liberty Oxygen offers creative ways to ‘trick out’ your medical equipment and many accessory pieces to help you transport items safely while maintaining the functionality to continue managing daily chores or errands independently. Stop in at any of the eight Minneapolis/St. Paul metro Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations and let the creative staff members show you some ideas to take your walker or rollator to the next level. IMG_2983

There are many options to choose from and each customer’s situation is unique. Let our professional, trained experts at Liberty Oxygen help you know what type of equipment fits best with your needs and will ensure your senior loved one is using the most efficient and safe type of mobility aid.

Crutches or Knee Walker? How to Know Which Type of Mobility Equipment Is Needed

Have an upcoming knee or foot surgery and concerned about being able to get around while you recover? Is your senior loved one showing signs of needing a little extra support when walking or recently took a nasty fall? Did your teenager break her leg in gymnastics? There are many options of mobility equipment on the market, but how do you know which type is best for your situation?IMG_2988

Crutches tend to be the first option to help with mobility after a fall or surgery, but depending on the situation a knee walker may be a much better option and should be considered. Crutches allow the user to take some or all the weight off one leg or foot. They may take a bit of practice to get comfortable using them. You may also want to have someone nearby to help keep you steady or maneuver steps, but once you get the hang of it, using crutches can be a breeze. Your doctor will recommend crutches only if the user has good balance, strength and endurance. A knee walker provides more freedom of movement for patients with below the knee injuries while supporting the injured leg in a non-weight bearing position. A knee walker is easy to use, stable, and requires minimal upper body strength.

If you break a bone, or have a bad sprain to your leg or foot, crutches may be the easiest to use to help you get around, but they require continuous balance and coordination by the user. Typically, doctors will prescribe the use of crutches only if the balance, stability and upper body strength is strong in the user. When used for several hours, underarm chafing can occur, so consider using sheepskin crutch covers on the armpit rests to make them more comfortable.Nova Knee Cruiser

If your loved one is unable to bear weight on one of their legs but the other leg is sturdy, a knee walker might be the best option. A knee walker is designed to assist the user in keeping weight off a leg or foot due to a fracture or following a surgery. They are used as temporary assistance, on average between 6-8 weeks. Liberty Oxygen offers a rental program with knee walkers that is very popular with our customers. Be sure to ask for details at one of our eight locations if this option appeals to you. Each user may discover their own benefits to using a knee walker, but here are a few to consider:

  • offers non-weight bearing support to your lower leg
  • your arms aren’t involved, so no arm soreness or chafing will occur
  • greater stability in any type of weather
  • makes everyday tasks more manageable
  • lower risk of re-injury
  • use is usually temporary

With either of the above mentioned walking aids, you can customize or personalize the equipment in a variety of ways (unless you are using the rental program). Liberty Oxygen offers creative ways to ‘trick out’ your medical equipment and many accessory pieces to help you transport items safely while maintaining the functionality to continue managing daily chores or errands independently. Stop in at any of our Minneapolis/St. Paul metro Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations and let the creative staff members show you some ideas to take your crutches or knee walker to the next level.

There are many options of mobility equipment to choose from and each customer’s situation is unique. Let our professional, trained experts at Liberty Oxygen help you decide what type of equipment fits best with your needs. Contact us today!

Why Should You Buy a Lift Chair From Liberty Oxygen?

Why purchase a lift chair from Liberty Oxygen instead of a furniture store? It’s simple really. The lift chairs sold in furniture stores start out as a recliner and the motor is added to the recliner after the fact. A lift chair sold in a medical supply company, such as Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment, is focused on the motor. The motor comes first and the chair is built around it making it more durable. It’s also important for lift chairs to have a battery back-up capability so that, if the electricity goes out, the user will not be stuck in their chair. Two 9-volt batteries are easily accessible in the back of the chairs. Overall, a medical lift chair will last longer than a furniture-brand lift chair.

The most popular lift chair styles we sell are the Golden Technologies lift chairs with MaxiComfort. The MaxiComfort series maxi comfort lift chairof lift chairs offers endless benefits to the user. There are several different styles and sizes available in the MaxiComfort series making them perfect in any home’s decor. A wide variety of fabric types and colors are also available. These chairs have dual motors which allow the backrest of the chair to move independently from the seat and footrest. Also, the AutoDrive hand control allows the user to program several buttons to their favorite position. For example, if I press the “TV” button on the hand control, the chair will move into the ideal TV-viewing position, sitting upright with your legs and feet up. The MaxiComfort series offers the most versatility, allowing the chair to move into a comfortable sleep position, into a “total comfort” position, zero gravity and the Trendelenburg position for people who need to recline with their feet above their head and heart to improve circulation. All Golden Technologies’ lift chairs are made in the USA by American workers. “Golden Technologies is proud to have Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment represent us in their community as an authorized reseller of our lift chairs. Their team is friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to help their customers find the right product to meet their needs,” says Pat O’Brien, Director of Marketing, Golden Technologies.

We often get the question, “Will my insurance pay for the entire lift chair?” The answer is no, insurance will not pay for the entire cost of a lift chair. If a customer qualifies for insurance coverage, the most that will be covered is the lift mechanism, approximately $365. To qualify for insurance coverage on a lift chair, the customer must have a detailed, written order from a physician, with the diagnosis listed. The customer needs to suffer from a neuromuscular disease, such as Parkinson’s, or severe Arthritis of the lower limbs. He/she must be unable to stand from a normal chair on his/her own but able to walk once standing. If Medicare is the primary insurance, face-to-face notes from the customer’s medical chart is required.

At Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment in Minnesota, we take pride in ensuring that our customers purchase a lift chair that fits his or her needs. We take into consideration the customer’s size as the chair needs to fit a person’s height, weight, and shape. Next, we ask how the chair will be used. Although lift chairs are not made to be used as beds, many people find it necessary to sleep in their chair for long periods of time. In this case, a dual motor chair is ideal because it allows the person to recline in an infinite number of positions including zero gravity. We ask what physical conditions the customer has. A customer with some dementia issues will need a simple controller with fewer buttons. As mentioned, a customer with cardiac issues will benefit from a chair that will move into the Trendelenberg position, allowing the feet to rise above the heart. A customer prone to incontinence will need a chair made of a non-absorbent material.

Watch Kristin Porrez, Retail Sales Manager at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment demonstrate how to use and explain why purchasing a power lift chair from a medical equipment store is the way to go:

As you can see, there are many options to choose from and things to consider when purchasing a power lift chair. It can become overwhelming when researching your options, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. The benefits gained will be well worth your efforts in research. Any of the Customer Care Specialists at Liberty Oxygen will be able to assist you, including helping you with questions on insurance coverage. Contact us today at Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment to learn more.

Best Selling CPAP Masks

With conditions such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and congestive heart failure on the rise, we at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment are seeing the CPAP mask manufacturers competing for this growing market. Manufacturers like Phillips Respironics and Fisher and Paykel are creating better masks for a more comfortable night’s sleep, and as a result, new masks are coming out on the market all the time.

Our PAP customers have a consistently high sleep therapy success rate because our expert staff at each of the eight Liberty Oxygen locations work with every customer individually to ensure they are being properly fitted and educated on the equipment. The fit and comfort of the mask, whether it’s a nasal mask or a full-face mask, is obviously very important to each customer. We want to ensure our customers use a mask that not only fits properly and is comfortable to wear, but also make sure our customer is educated in the use and care of their CPAP mask. For instance, to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit, it is recommended you replace your CPAP mask every six months, which is also the intended useful life of a mask recommended by the manufacturer. As a leading provider of home medical equipment and oxygen in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area, we offer a comprehensive selection of the top selling CPAP masks to help guide you in your selection of which mask works best for you.

Here are some of our top selling CPAP masks in 2014:

By far, our top selling nasal mask in 2014 was the Phillips Respironics Nasal Wisp mask. Compact and lightweight, the Wisp offers a minimal contact experience, a superior seal and an open field of vision.Wisp

F&P431The Fisher & Paykel FlexiFit™ 431 was another top selling mask last year. The FlexiFit™ 431 Full Face Mask offers a comfortable alternative to nasal or oral delivery. It incorporates the FlexiFit™ technology with auto-contouring properties, features an under-chin fit and highly contoured silicone seal for maximum comfort and stability.

Also popular was the ComfortGel Blue. With ComfortGel Blue, the pressure points are minimized, the noise is significantly reduced, and the exhalation airflow is redirected away from your bed partner. These and other enhancements may help to create a better customer experience and encourage greater compliance.Comfort Gel Blue

The ResMed Swift for Her CPAP mask fits into the nostrils and is specifically designed for women. This design, and other ResMed Swift masks were also among the top 20 best sellers in 2014.Swift For Her

This is just a small sampling of some of our best sellers and what we offer at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment. We have a wide selection of CPAP masks in each of our stores, or we can order directly from the manufacturer if you are looking for something we don’t carry in-house.

During the month of April, we hosted free CPAP clinics at each of our medical supply store locations. They were a huge success and we hope you were able to stop in to have your mask and equipment checked for safety. If you were not able to attend one of our April clinics, please call your local Liberty Oxygen store to schedule a check-up.

Whether you are buying your first mask or replacing a current one, when you think about your next CPAP mask purchase, be sure to consider and try on the latest styles before deciding on one for you. Let the experts at Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment assist you with comfort and fit along with teaching you how to care for and properly use your CPAP mask. The friendly staff at our medical equipment locations are also educated and experienced with the insurance side of things and can work with your insurance company to ensure your mask and supplies are covered.
