Easy Ways to Put on Compression Stockings

Compression therapy is a very common type of treatment used to treat various conditions. Some of the most common are:

  • chronic venous disease
  • varicose veins
  • aftercare following surgery
  • venous issues during pregnancy.
  • Chronic venous insufficiency
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome
  • Severe edema
  • Venous ulcer
  • Lymphedema
  • Orthostatic hypotension

Compression therapy is most commonly used on the forearms, hands, legs, and feet. Our medical supply stores in Minnesota get a majority of compression equipment requests for the legs and feet so we’ve become experts in socks and stockings used to treat these difficult conditions. Although compression therapy is a common type of treatment, it is often failed or unsuccessful due to the difficulty in putting on the stockings. Loss of hand strength, arthritis, inability to bend over and other dexterity issues contribute to the difficulty in putting the stockings on. The actual compression of the stocking is another reason. For example, graduated compression hosiery has the tightest part of the stocking at the ankle. This makes it difficult to get the stocking over your heel while putting them on.

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment carries several types of compression stockings and has certified fitters at all of our eight Twin Cities locations. Our fitters will assist you in selecting your stockings, donning, proper compression, style, fabric and color. Our certified fitters are very knowledgeable in compression therapy and the compression equipment commonly used. They will also give you pointers and demonstrate ways to put your compression stockings on.DMI Sock Aid

The most popular compression stocking we sell are Medi stockings as their special processing and silicone blend softener make these stockings easy to put on and their wide range of sizes offer more of a custom fit. Resilient yarns allow for greater durability and reciprocated heel and toe provide a better fit and durability. The smooth design and soft texture provides a softer, more fashionable look with the ultimate in year-round coverage. Another popular line of stockings we carry is Jobst. The Jobst soSoft knee-high socks offer gradient compression while being soSoft and soEasy to put on. Our Sensifoot line is known as “The Complete Diabetic Sock” given its mild compression yet comfortable fit. The Medi and Jobst lines are graduated compression hosiery and designed specifically for people who are mobile. The hosiery provides more compressive pressure at the lower end of the garment and gradually decreases toward the upper end of the garment. The stockings can be worn approximately 4-6 months before they should be replaced. Both brands are available in Knee High, Thigh High and Pantyhose styles. Other varieties such as the athletic sock have become quite popular given their similarity to regular sport socks. We also carry anti-embolism (TED) stockings. TED compression stockings are used in hospitals for non-mobile patients. Doctors prescribe them for patients who are confined to a bed and at risk for blood clot formation. TED stockings are made from white fabric and have an inspection opening just above the toes. Unlike the Jobst or Medi brand stockings, TED compression is not graduated but instead, is the same level of compression throughout the length of the garment. A simple way to know which type of stocking and compression is needed is to remember TEDs are for BED.

There are several ways to put on your compression stockings; here are some helpful hints to make putting them on a little easier:Jobst Donning Gloves

  • Turn the sock inside out and, starting at your toes, inch them up your leg
  • Use rubber gloves to obtain a better grip
  • Use a ridge sock aid
  • Use a stocking donner
  • Put your stockings on first thing in the morning before your legs begin to swell
  • Make sure your legs are dry
  • Do not apply lotion on your legs before putting your stockings on – if you use lotion, you should apply it at bedtime

Stocking DonnerThe easiest method we have found to put on compression stockings is to use a stocking donner. A donner is a metal frame device that has two handles and an inner half tube to hold the stocking. The word ‘donner’ comes from the word don, which means “to put on.” Medi & Jobst both offer an easy to use stocking donner and you can find them at all eight Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment locations. There are other manufacturers of donners, but we like the coated metal (helps avoid snags to the stockings) and the padded handles. The following is a step by step guide to use the donner to put on support stockings. how_to_put_on_compression_stockings

Helping Seniors Stay Independent & Mobile

Today’s world is very fast-paced and dynamic. We have so many ways to stay connected and mobile via technology, but there is another, more simplistic way to look at a senior’s mobility. From the moment we get out of bed each morning we rely on our ability to move to get us through our daily needs – standing up from a chair, walking across the room to use the bathroom, and even making our way through a grocery store or going to doctor appointments are necessary functions for seniors that we often take for granted.Statistics by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) for the United States and Canada show that over 18 million people in the U.S. and Canada struggle with mobility issues and one in five elderly people are dealing with loss of mobility on a daily basis. Some have had mobility disabilities since birth, others gradually develop their disability later in life, or it can be caused by a traumatic event or accident.

One challenge faced is accessing public buildings – whether it’s the lack of entrance ramp access to narrow doorways that don’t allow wheelchair entry to icy Minnesota sidewalks, these issues and many more are common frustrations. Even looking inside the home, you’ll see many areas or situations where a loved one or someone you care for can struggle getting around independently. The bathroom and kitchen can be dangerous areas, but both are accessed daily and are needed to function.

More common among older adults, loss of mobility has social, psychological, and physical consequences, which can be profound. “If you’re unable to get out then you can’t go shopping, you can’t go out with your friends to eat dinner or go to the movies, and you become dependent on other people to get you places. So you become a recluse, you stay home, you get depressed. With immobilization comes incontinence, because you can’t get to the bathroom, you can develop urinary infections, skin infections. The list goes on,” says geriatrician Dr. Suzanne Salamon, an instructor at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Salamon goes on to say that loss of mobility puts you at greater risk for falling, which often results in a hip fracture. “That’s the worst, because within a year 20% of people with hip fractures die from complications. So we try to avoid that at all costs.”

There is professional support available in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and a wide variety of aids to daily living that will help you maintain your mobility and independence. Talk with your doctor to determine a plan that works for your situation. Be open to suggestions for change and recommendations for mobility equipment that will make your life easier and safe such as a walker or cane to prevent falls. If you or your loved one uses a cane, Liberty Oxygen has ice cane tips available at all our locations and they are crucial wheice_cane_tipn maneuvering the icy Minnesota sidewalks. The ice cane tip is a simple device that attaches to the end of any walking cane and the spikes at the tip give the user more stability and support on the icy sidewalks or parking lots. Seeing a therapist or joining a support group in the Minneapolis area can really make a difference in how you approach changing your lifestyle to allow for greater independent mobility. Seeing others live vital, happy lives while using a scooter or riding public transportation can be a great confidence booster.

The experiences of people with mobility disabilities can vary widely; as can their attitudes about their disabilities, and their strategies for managing them. Your willingness to try new things or change your routine a little is crucial to remaining mobile. Assistive devices and medical equipment will make a big difference in maintaining your loved one’s independence. Simply using a walking cane, shower chair and elevated toilet seat will enable them to use the bathroomraised_toilet_seat facilities on their own. Other disabilities may require the use of a wheelchair or scooter to keep you moving throughout the day. Scooters are particularly helpful due to their ruggedness and maneuverability for mobility away from home. Still others may require some structural reconstruction to your home to keep loss of mobility to a minimum. Addiscooterng access ramps, widening hallways and doorways to allow wheelchair access, and adjusting the height of sinks and countertops are all very common structural changes that can increase your independence. There are many assistive device options and styles to choose from, so stop by one of our eight locations to speak with an expert who will take the time to assess your needs and determine the best possible medical supplies to remain independent and mobile.

Loss of mobility is a problem that can lead to many other mental and physical health issues, but it is preventable and treatable. With the right mindset, support and home medical equipment, you or your loved one can live a much more independent, mobile lifestyle.

Get a “Lift” in One of Our Quality Chairs

lift chairHave you noticed that you or a loved one is having difficulty getting up and down from a chair or couch? This could be a sign of mobility issues and incorporating the use of a power lift chair into a daily routine will offer a more independent living lifestyle and reduce the risk of falling.

At Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment in Minnesota, we take pride in ensuring that our customers purchase a lift chair that fits his or her needs. We take into consideration the customer’s size as the chair needs to fit a person’s height, weight, and shape. Next, we ask how the chair will be used. Although, lift chairs are not made to be used as beds, many people find it necessary to sleep in their chair for long periods of time. In this case, a dual motor chair is ideal because it allows the person to recline in an infinite number of positions including zero gravity. We ask what physical conditions the customer possesses. A customer with some dementia issues will need a simple controller with fewer buttons. A customer with cardiac issues will benefit from a chair that will move into the Trendelenberg position, allowing the feet to rise above the heart. A customer prone to incontinence will need a chair made of a non-absorbent material.

Why buy a lift chair from Liberty instead of a furniture store? It’s simple really. The lift chairs sold in furniture stores start out as a recliner and the motor is added to the recliner after the fact. A lift chair sold in a medical supply company, such as Liberty Oxygen & Medical Equipment, is focused on the motor. The motor comes first and the chair is built around it making it more durable. Overall, a medical lift chair will last longer than a furniture-brand lift chair.

maxi comforter lift chairOne of the most popular lift chair styles we sell is a Golden Technologies Maxi-Comforter. The benefits with this chair are endless. There are several different styles available in this series of lift chair making it perfect in any home’s decor. These chairs have dual motors which allow the back of the chair to move independently from the seat. Also, the controller has the option to control several preset positions. For example, if I press the “TV” button on the controller, the chair will move into the ideal TV-viewing position, sitting up with your legs up. There is even an option for the end-user to program their favorite position into the controller. This series of chairs allows the most versatility, allowing the chair to go flat (like a bed), into a “total comfort” position, and zero gravity.

It’s important for lift chairs to have a battery back-up capability so that, if the electricity goes out, the consumer will not be stuck in their chair. Two 9-volt batteries are easily accessible in the back of the chairs.

We often get the question, “Will my insurance pay for the entire lift chair?” The answer is no insurance will not pay for the entire cost of a lift chair. If a customer qualifies for insurance coverage, the most that will be covered is the lift mechanism, approximately $365. To qualify for insurance coverage on a lift chair, the customer must have a detailed, written order from his physician, with the diagnosis listed. The customer needs to suffer from a neuromuscular disease, such as Parkinson’s, or severe Arthritis of the lower limbs. He/she must be unable to stand from a normal chair on his/her own but able to walk once standing. If Medicare is the primary insurance, face-to-face notes from the customer’s medical chart is required.

As you can see, there are many options to choose from and things to consider when purchasing a power lift chair. It can become overwhelming when researching your options, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. The benefits gained will be well worth your efforts in research. Any of the Customer Care Specialists at Liberty will be able to assist you, including helping you with questions on insurance coverage. Fall Prevention

Falls are a leading cause of emergency room visits considering 35%-40% of people over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. In addition, falls are the leading cause of death due to injury. If you’ve fallen once, you are 2-3 times more likely to fall again in the next 3 months. With the Minnesota winter upon us very soon, it’s helpful to know the risk factors and some helpful tips for fall prevention when navigating inside your Minneapolis home or outside on the icy streets ice_cane_tipand sidewalks. Some common risk factors to keep in mind when caring for someone 65 years and older are poor eyesight, history of stroke or progressive neurological disease. Many people who are unsteady on their feet, have arthritis, joint disease or even taking medications that cause weakness also fall under this high risk group. These risk factors, and more, are important to know when trying to prevent a fall. 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls – 40% of those hospitalized for hip fracture do not return to independent living and 20% will die within a year. This sounds like a scary statistic, but with some smart prevention steps, you or your loved one can reduce the risk of falling in your everyday activities. With more than 55% of falls happening inside the home and another 23% occuring outside, but near the home, take some time to ensure the home areas are not a safety hazard. Use nightlights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallway areas, remove any throw rugs and install anti-slip stairway treads at garage entry to home. Make sure you’re wearing properly fitting footwear, exercise regularly to increase muscle flexibility, strength and balance and even consider obtaining an emergency call system. If there are loose steps or items blocking a clear pathway in and out of the home, now is a good time to take care of those projects, before it gets too cold and icy outside. By doing some of these things, you can greatly reduce the risk of a painful, costly accident. tub_railTo help ensure further prevention, consider installing some specialized medical equipment in the home. A raised toilet seat can really reduce the risk of falling and are easy to manage. In the shower area, there are several items to use – a rubber bath mat, a shower chair and even grab bars would help getting in and out of the shower daily. Since a bad fall can also lead to further medical problems, resulting in higher costs and impacted quality of life, it is worth the time now to ensure a safe environment for you or your aging family members. Fear of falling can keep you from doing the things you love. By taking the necessary steps and implementing some of these prevention steps, it will ensure you can continue to live independently in your home and maintain your quality of life.

How to get a Hospital Bed Covered by Medicare

Due to a multitude of conditions, getting in and out of bed and sleeping through the night can be a difficult, sometimes dangerous situation. Having a hospital bed can make the difference between living independently in one’s Minnesota home and moving into a senior living community. Doctors may even require that their patient obtain  a hospital bed for home use before they can leave a hospital or care facility. As with many medical supplies, getting a hospital bed covered by Medicare is a detailed, sometimes arduous process. Having knowledge of the requirements well in advance of needing a hospital bed and working with an experienced supplier of durable medical equipment (DME) will increase your chances of getting coverage in a timely manner.

hospital bed mnFirst, if you live in a Medicare Competitive Bidding Area (CBA) such as Minneapolis, you will have to find a medical equipment company that won the bid to supply hospital beds to Medicare beneficiaries, such as Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment.  If you don’t know which providers you can use, you can go to www.Medicare.gov.  On the bottom left side of the landing page, click on the tab “find supplier of medical equipment and supplies.” The next page will ask you to put in your zip code, and hit go.  This will bring up a list of contracted providers in your area.

Second, you need to have a face to face evaluation with a physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or physician within six months prior to having a written prescription.  During this encounter, the physician or practitioner must document in the patient’s medical record:

1)      a needs assessment for the patient;

2)      the benefit to the patient in having a hospital bed; or how the bed would treat the patient for their medical condition that supports the need for the hospital bed; and

3)      the patient’s diagnosis and/or medical condition.

The evaluation documented in the medical record must be signed by the physician, regardless of who actually performed the face to face evaluation.

Next, even if a hospital bed is prescribed by a physician, in order for Medicare to pay for it, the patient has to meet the Medicare guidelines for a semi-electric hospital bed. Medicare does not pay for full-electric hospital beds under any circumstance.  The requirements are that the patient’s medical condition requires body positioning not possible in an ordinary bed due to any of the following:

1)      Alleviating pain

2)      Needing their head to be elevated more than 30 degrees due to CHF/chronic pulmonary disease and /or aspiration

3)      Requiring traction equipment that can only be attached to a hospital bed

4)      The patient requires frequent and/or immediate changes in body position.

Liberty Oxygen and Medical Equipment has a hospital bed coverage criteria form that outlines these requirements that can be completed and used as appropriate documentation. Contact any one of our 8 locations in Minnesota.

Finally, Medicare requires the medical equipment provider to collect all the appropriate documentation, as well as a written prescription, in order to get coverage for the hospital bed.  The written prescription must contain the following five pieces of information:

1)      The date of the order

2)      The beneficiary’s name

3)      The medical equipment being ordered

4)      The prescribing practitioner’s NPI number

5)      Dated signature of the prescribing practitioner

The documentation that is required is a copy of the medical records that contains the face to face encounter signed by the physician that shows  the coverage criteria has been met, along with the patient’s demographics.

Getting a hospital bed covered by Medicare requires attention to detail, persistence and a knowledgeable network of service providers. Having a hospital bed in your Minneapolis home can provide safety and independence.
